Ecotourism

Paddling in St. Lawrence Islands National Park (SLINP) and Environs

What is Ecotourism?

The most commonly used definition of ecotourism is, “Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people” (The International Ecotourism Society, 1990). However, most scholars would agree that there is not a universal definition in place. Instead several recurring characteristics are found amongst the multitude of definitions present.

According to Donohoe’s (2006) research, most definitions of ecotourism include elements of: (1) nature-based; (2) conservation/preservation; (3) education; (4) sustainability; (5) distribution of benefits; and (6) ethics/responsibility/awareness.

Ecotourism in the 1000 Islands Region

Through the collaboration of 1000ikc and FAPA, Juliene M. is conducting research towards a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies. Her research will focus around the concept of ecotourism, and its 6 elements, with respect to paddle-based recreation in SLINP and environs. To ensure that all stakeholders’ perspectives are considered multiple methodologies will be used, including a questionnaire. 1000ikc encourages you to participate in this questionaire and strengthen our community.

Julienne’s Questionaire

The questionnaire serves as a tool to investigate who is paddling in the region, if there are commonalities we could use to classify these visitors, and if these visitors would be open to the concept of ecotourism. Getting an idea of who is visiting the area will hopefully allow all stakeholders, including the tourism industry, the community and visitors to make more sustainable choices.

The questionnaire is designed to take approximately 5 – 10 minutes to complete. All respondents will remain anonymous and may exit the survey at anytime. Please remember, thatyour decision to complete this questionnaire will be interpreted as an indication of your consent to participate. If you have any questions concerning any aspect of this research feel free to email Julienne, she will be glad to hear from you.

If you paddled in the Thousand Islands Region this year and are over the age of 18, you are eligible to fill out the questionnaire.1000ikc thanks you in advance for taking the time to contribute to your community!
