FAQ (Frequenlty Asked Questions)

Do I need previous Kayaking Experience?

No experience is necessary for any of our tours. Our tours and equipment are designed for folks that have never been in a kayak before. We provide all necessary equipment and instruction (we call it Kayaking 101) to ensure a comfortable experience. Our guides are there to insure a positive experience for first time kayakers!

Do I need to be in great shape to kayak?

Not for sea kayaking. We set a leisurely pace for all our trips. The key is to relax and enjoy your kayaking. Our participants come in all shapes, sizes and ages to enjoy our tours. Remember our trips are leisurely explorations.

Just try it, you’ll love it!The growing popularity of kayaking is partly due to how surprised participants are at just how comfortable and stable touring kayaks really are.

Is this like white water kayaking or rafting?

Not at all. There is no white water or rapids on any of our tours. Our kayaking tours take place in scenic sheltered areas to avoid wind and waves. Like skiing, there is downhill as well as cross-country skiing. Although each is a style of skiing, they are two completely different activities. Kayaking is like that, two completely different activities.

Do you rent kayaks?

We do rent kayaks (see our “Rentals” page). However, kayaking in the islands has its own “set of rules”. Some places in the islands see very heavy boating traffic and can make navigating through the hundreds of islands tricky. Our guides are trained to lead groups specifically in the 1000 Islands to maximize your safety and experience so a day trip may be a good way to start.

Will I flip over in my kayak?

Although there is always an inherent possibility a paddler may tip out of a kayak, it is extremely unlikely. Our kayaks are roomy and comfortable. In the unlikely event of capsize the kayaker simply “slides” out of their kayak. In fact, most people slip out of the kayak before their head even gets wet.

Do I Have to “Roll” a kayak?

No. Rolling a kayaking is for paddlers of a higher skill level and more associated with whitewater kayaking. It is not a necessary skill for any of our trips or courses.
